    Hey Shawn,
You book sounds cool! Yes, we got married in August, it was a blast. For sure I'll see you in MN for the SCAA show ... wanna volunteer for a class I'm teaching again? :)
  • Colin Newell

    Enough of the gray.

    Shawn,
I heard through the grape vine that you got a degree in horticulture. Well, I live in NC and trying to get a scholarship for my horticulture degree but need to tell that horticulture will benefit my career. I know I want a career in coffee, but also want to pursue my degree program in horticulture, is any careers out there that horticulture will directly benefit? Any information will be helpful.

    Thanks
  • WMitro

Well, I guess my main question would be how does someone get in the horticulture aspect of coffee, job wise?
  • WMitro

Thats very cool, I mean I am always looking for a job and where ever that job may take me. We need to stay in touch so I can be updated with the coffee hort world. But anyways, a blunt direct question for you, lets say I graduate in a year and a half, think there might be job openings for coffee farms in the Hawaii area? or maybe other areas of the world as well?

Hey Shawn. I ran across your profile here and figured maybe I should have one too. I know that doesn't make me as cool as you but I gotta try.

Hey Shawn, I'm also on the coffee researchers' group. I am a chemistry undergrad at the Wilkes Honors College in Jupiter, FL. To graduate honors, I have to do research and write a thesis for my senior year. I hope to write mine on coffee, but am currently looking at what questions I need ask, and what I could contribute to the quality coffee cause.

Currently, I am interning at an environmental chemistry laboratory, where I perform soil and water extractions to test for contamination (BTEX, MTBE, pesticides, etc.). With a little luck, I'll be able to move up into an analyst postition to work with the GC-MS set-ups. So I figure GC-MS analysis of coffee might be a possibility, maybe optimizing extraction of desirable flavors, or increasing yields of antioxidants (chlorogenic acids, anyone?).

For my birthday, I am receiving a copy of Andrea Illy's book on espresso, and possibly the Probat book on roasting. Do you have any other recommendations for scientific literature on coffee? Also, I'd love to learn more about what you do; maybe I really can make this passion into a career.
