About Me:
I live in Portland Oregon where I am the director of training at the American Barista & Coffee School and Bellissimo Coffee Advisors. I am also a partner at Water Avenue Coffee. I spend most of my time training new and existing business owners how to open and operate successful retail coffee businesses. In my spare time you might find me having coffee or sipping a pint at one of Portlands great coffee shops or brew pubs. I spend lots of time also with my beautiful wife and little wiener dog.
Professionally I have been in this industry for almost 15 years and have worked as a barista, manager, trainer and consultant. I speak at Coffee Fest and SCAA Tradeshows and sit on the SCAA Training Committee as a lead espresso trainer and was on the USBC Committee 2007/08. I have been certified as a judge for the NWRBC/USBC and have placed 3rd in the MillRock Latte Art Competition. I have written articles for Barista Magazine, Fresh Cup Magazine, Specialty Coffee Retailer and the SCAA Chronicle and have been quoted in many magazines and newspapers in regards to specialty coffee and retail coffee business.
About My Company:
The American Barista & Coffee School [ABC's] is the first and only professional school in the U.S. devoted to domestic and international specialty coffee business education and hands-on barista training. No other coffee school can match the scope of ABC's educational and retail success-building curriculum.
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
teaching people about how amazing coffee is, and seeing them fall in love.
It has all been our pleasure Matt. It meant to be that we meet you and Bruce in Hong Kong Coffee feast. Moreover, we never regret in flying a thousand miles just to attend the class coz it is all worth it. Keep up all the good work.:)
Hi, thank you for the welcome, I´m about to attend my basic Barista course here in El Salvador, you can count with your fingers the people that talk this lenguage over here its like virgin land or maybe I havent meet them but I want to go as far as it gets in this Coffee enthusiast path.
it was great to meet you well. I am excited for you to see what's going on. Actually nothings going on for me except a little prospecting here in atlanta.

Matt,
Thanks for your time. Big thanks for all your local, regional world wide support for people of coffee. PDX is becoming or already is the World Java meca. What I love most about this business is watching rate at which it is evolving. Not just within itself but how it changes the way we look at and treat the people of the world who bring us this wonderful bean.
Best Regards,
Joe
Yo Matt! What's up dude. We're OPEN! Opened the 27th. I worked about 120 hours this week. Craziness. But we're doing pretty well. Been pretty busy. I hope you're doing awesome bro.
Matt - Great to see you this weekend at the USBC. The ABC school is a great setup - really glad I got to see it. Thanks for the party and for helping to make the Portland trip so much fun.
Mr. Milletto. If I do not see, speak or make any more contact by next week. May the luck of the Irish look upon thee and may all the snakes be chased from your path. Cheers!
Thanks for your website t o give the chance to meet so much barista!
Nice to meet you here as well.

How this works?
Matt.
Chris here.
There's an idea I have that I would love to talk to you about... Do you have an email address that I could send a more complete message to?
Your help in what I'm trying to do would be invaluable to me..
Hey Matt,
My name is Chris Tellez, I work at Espresso Post in Collingwood, Canada.
I have an idea I'm working towards and if you could give me a few minutes of your time I'd love to get your email, and let you in on what I'm trying to do.
As a young barista it can be difficult to get out into the coffee world and any help you could give would be invaluable.
Hi Matt! So yeah, for me it's back to reality now, but I very much enjoyed going to Portland and came back more knowledgeable about the coffee industry than I was when I had first arrived there. I've been trying to taste all the coffee I brought back from class and I really enjoyed the Monsoon Indian Malabar, as well as the many other individuals I shared it with. In addition to my morning intake of coffee, I drank 5 cups of it the other day after work and boy was I wired! Good stuff... Thanks again, and for creating such an awesome site :)
Hi Matt! I currently live in the middle of WA state, but I come down to Portland as often as I can. Do you offer workshops at your coffee school? I am interested in learning more about cupping procedures (I've only done a couple) and latte art, but don't have enough time, nor I suspect, funds, for a longer program... If you don't, could you suggest some places that might offer such day-long workshops? Thank you!
Hey Matt, Don't know if you handle the tech side of this site. But when ever some one posts a reply to a posting I've made it never shows up on my page. Thanks
Gidday Matt, just thought I would say hi! Saw that in the 80's you popped down into the South Pacific with your folks. Did you ever visit NZ? I am here at the moment getting a small place set up in Auckland. Would recommend a visit if you could ever squeeze some time into what i imagine is a very hectic schedule.
Matt, it was really great to meet you. I'm glad we got to talk a bit during the course of the weekend. Thanks for starting this website. Hope I can make it to Seattle. Keep up the great work!
hello matt, i'm sure your set for coffeefest, seattle. set and excited i hope. i was just wondering if you are offering up any tickets this year? i'm not greedy. could use one or two.
aloha mike
everything is SOOO great! We're slammed every day and really haven't started advertisements yet! I haven't even put up our "now open" sign because if we get anyone else we would explode! I will save it for our next location- hope all is well on your side of the country and am still gunning to get to Coffeefest in Seatle!
See you soon and thanks for helping make all of this possible- I have posted pictures on my page if you get some time to peek at those too!
Hey Matt,
Good to meet you and your wife the other day. Sorry I had to duck out early but I'm sure we'll meet again. I thought you might like an update since they did the wildcard draw. Robs name did not get pulled which kind of stings since he will end up with a better score than over half the field in the Canadians. Oh well. Try again next year.
Well, it must be fate... because a finalist from our region dropped out, (as opposed to another wildcard,) they go to the next highest score. Rob will be competing at the Canadians! Any chance you can make it to Van for the show?
