One of the highlights of my time here in Savannah has been the pleasure of being a member of the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus. On Friday, Oct. 2 the chorus along with the Savannah philharmonic orchestra will be putting on a performance of Verdi’s Requiem.

In hopes of encouraging people to attend the concert, Cup to Cup Coffee Roasters is offering a discount to anyone… Continue

New (ish) Blog

I haven't been on here in a while and felt the need to remedy that. I do have a blog that I've started for the roastery (which also needs to be posted on soon) and I plan to start posting those blogs here for you guys to see. If you want to see what's already there, you can head on over to http://cuptocup.wordpress.com. I'll put one of my first posts here for you to get an idea of what it's about. Hope you enjoy!

So I've finished my roasting apprenticeship and now am getting the ball rolling towards opening my own roastery in Savannah, GA! I'm currently going through the frustrating, time consuming, and sometimes ridiculous ordeal of all that goes on on the business side of getting things started. Looking at spaces, finding web designer, licenses and what not. All is going well so far. We'll see how things develop. Peace.

One Month in, What now?

I've been here in Guatemala now for a month. I'm now doing all the roasting orders for Mike with the exception of a few special ones he directs, but still involves me in. I've visited several farms and learned about green coffee selection and what to look for.

My next big task is taking my own farm trip. I'm planning on spending a week in Antigua visiting friends and checking out a few farms. There is also a possibility that I'll make a trip up to Hue Hue Tenango, though I'm not sure about… Continue

A Typical Day in Guatemala . . . kinda

Posted on February 16, 2008 at 7:28pm 1 Comment

Just a general idea of what's going on with my apprenticeship. Got into the shop at 6:00 A.M. and started up the roaster. I've gotten to the point where I (get to) start early by myself and clean things up and get the roaster started and ready for the day. Today was light, we roasted about 60 lbs. of Hue Hue. Mike comes down finally with coffee and a little something to eat. He reminds me (again and again) what I"m looking for in the roast and when to drop it in and when to take it… Continue

James, I think my bro-in-law actually has been to Crossroad Cafe a few times. He spent a couple years in Guatemala as a missionary, working with Mennonite Air Missions. I live in Waynesboro GA, just a little ways up the highway from you. If I plan an anniversary trip to Savannah with my wife, would I be able to see your roastery, or perhaps could you recommend a shop to visit?

Did you make Indonesia on your trip?? I guess not if you did not tack on OZ and NZ (not necessarily as an afterthought!!). My 25kg drum originally came from a roaster just outside Antigua

Thanx so much for the info. I checked out the website...it says costs is over $3k for 20 days. Were you able to negotiate a better rate with him, or is he open to allowing people to work it off or exchange skills/expertise?

Hey James,
How did you land your roasting apprenticeship w/ Crossroads? I'd like to open a roaster/retail shop but only have home roasting experience. It seems hard to find a temporary apprenticeship in roasting. Would welcome any suggestions you may have.
