what ive learnt about making coffee today #1

wish i could have started this at the beginning of my epic coffee saga but hey three weeks barista experience is close enough to the… Continue

A quick Rochester Visit

I love this store! It's enormous:

Originally a car dealership, the Rochester store is still called Spot “Chevy”. It somehow manages to feel comfortable rather than cavernous, despite the size. This

store doubles as a gallery space for many artists, and they have lots

of room for doing music acts as well.…

Espresso Apollo and some thoughts on 'spro culture.

One of the guys that works with me at Spot Elmwood was headed down to Philadelphia for a few days, to visit the Mutter Museum of Medical Oddities among other things. When I learned this, I immediately gave him directions to go to Ultimo coffee (it's possible I may have also instructed him to hit on Aaron Ultimo for me if possible). And, knowing that they have Counter Culture coffee, I was hoping he could pick me up a pound of that… Continue

Buffalo Brewing Blog

Buffalo Brewing is a blog about the coffee and coffee-house scene in Western New York. I'm based out of Buffalo. I want to encourage the growth of specialty coffee and good

third places in my city and beyond, by encouraging education and a

sense of community on both sides of the counter. I also want a place

to put my thoughts/rants/opinions/questions about coffee and cafés

down where they can, in theory, be publicly ridiculed.…

Battle Scars, Grinder Ideas

I thought I was pretty clever, coming in to work before 5am to swap out the burrs in our main coffee grinder. One hour and a number of odd complications later, I was starting to sweat at the thought of all those coffee orders just over the horizon...fortunately, I got everything brewing in time. Our fix-everything-man came by and helped me figure out the problem: turns out I was just being too gentle in trying to loosen a bolt. Gentleness aside, I did manage to stab myself pretty good with a… Continue

Ann Arbor's Chocolate House with a coffee chaser

Don’t let the name throw you off the caffeine track. The Chocolate House is not just driving chocolate, it’s got coffee in the passenger’s seat. Mad mix and brew master Jacob Smith conducts some of the finest coffee’s and chocolate’s in Ann Arbor, Mi. Tucked between a Chinese food resturant and Prickly Pear Southwest café, it is the ONLY standing Victorian house left in downtown.

Formerly Carillon Chocolates, The Chocolate House 330 S. Main St. Ann Arbor, Mi. 48104 is brewing and… Continue

INDIA - Coffee region gets less rain, but recovery expected

The area under coffee has seen an upward trend in India, with areas from non-traditional regions in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa being added.

“The area under coffee is pegged at 380,000 hectares (ha) in the current crop season, 10 per cent higher than the production area in the last three years,” said Jayarama, director (research) of the…

Coffee, family and fun at the Zoo

Some might say caffeine and kids are a wicked bad combo. But according to Jessica and Jamie Owulette, it’s the perfect blend to make it a zoo. Zoobilee café at 1834 Whittaker Road, Ypsilanti Mi. is one of a kind in the making.

“We’re doing something in the community for kids,” Jessica said, “it’s our whole drive.” Their website, http://www.zoobileeplaycafe.com has their mission statement: “Zoobilee is a family owned business dedicated to… Continue

Do you make coffee at work or rather visit a nearby cafeteria

I always loved the convenience of having cafeterias a stone’s throw away from my workplace but looking back this was expensive entertainment especially with many visitors and colleagues. Though, this was the only

chance to have a decent chat with them you know. More recently the situation has changed and because of the very high monthly costs I decided to start making coffee at work by…
