I was thinking of doing the same thing. So far I've found Lavu (poslavu.com) and Revel (http://revelsystems.com/) Revel comes with the whole setup; ipad, cash drawer, software, receipt printer, credit card reader, and wireless router. It's a little more expensive than getting each thing separately, and a little less expensive than a traditional POS terminal. $3,600 I think. I think it's nice because if another better POS app comes out, you just load it, rather than buying a whole new terminal. I haven't actually tried either of these, but if you have an ipad, you can download a free trial of Lavu to check it out. Good luck and keep us posted. This definitely seems like the way to go if you don't want to drop 6 G's on a cash register...

Thanks, I have heard of Lavu but I couldn't find a contact number for them on their site. Could you buy the software alone?

Those both have some great features and are 2 that seem to be leading the pack. Revel Systems has some really cool features, like they put an app in the app store which customers can view your menu and order and it sends it straight to your POS screen. They have a steep monthly fee, $100/mth for hosting, updates and support. One that I really like for it's simplicity and good back office stuff is Shopkeep. Their new iPad POS is releasing in a week or 2 in the app store. It's a free download and you pay $49, $79, or $129 depending on features you need, for hosting, support and updates. So for the price of an iPad, printer, and cash drawer (less than $1000) your up and running. Another i have been watching is Own it is specifically designed for our industry and will have some very amazing features. I was told that they are going to adapt their software to work with the iPad, but not sure on release time frame. I have heard a few different guesses.

I am in the Minneapolis, MN uptown area. And I am a reseller for POSLavu. Im sure I could answer any questions you may have about the system, process, setup or software. I even have a demonstration terminal so you could even see it in action.
When I did my research trying to get my personal questions answered about how to implement a system like this. POSLavu was more responsive, available, and helpful than any other developer group I contacted. This is why a became a reseller for them.
After using and setting up the software it really is fully featured and fast.

Have u looked at salz in the app store , very simple to setup, the pro version prints, doesn't have cash drawer or a card reader but does the job, we use Chase for our debit and credit cards. There are at least 2 coffee bars in Vancouver other than ours that are using it. It's extremely simple so may not work in a cafe that has a kitchen situation happening but it will email receipts and reports, it's very easy to add items and categories, specials , discounts by percentage or by dollar amounts, but like I said it's simple and gets lots of second looks.

Ha I'm a different Tamara (in Nebraska) and we just started using Shopkeep at Cultiva. Have to say I like it but could definitely use some upgrades. The support is great though and they are always available by phone or sometimes online chat for questions. Will have to elaborate later seeing as how I'm working right now:)

I wrote a cafe point of sale system that uses an iphone or ipod touches for waiters to take orders from customers and then has an imac server that runs multiple receipt printers (for kitchen, bar and til) to print dockets. We've been using it in my cafe for a year...

'd like to chime in... I'm a newbie but I to am looking into getting the Ipad Pos Software. I really like the POS Lavu. I've done the trial and it is fairly easy to add and update the menu. They also have features that Shop Keep doesn't (printing off a reciept, clock in/clock out) Plus in the long run (over 5 year) POS Lavu is cheaper than Shopkeep.
My question is about the Credit Card processing/gateway services. I'd like to know what others are using and what can I expect to pay for these processing and gateway fees.
So far I've received quotes from Mercury, Magensa, and Merchant Warehouse....
There is a special for one of the gateway services for $20/month, regardless of how many cards are swiped. Is that a good deal? ( I know it would depend of how many customers use their cards)

We're rockin Square in the shop. Other places in town are doin so as well, with no complaints. Obviously, if your wifi goes down, you're boned (unless you have the 3G iPad).
