hi all-
every so often, i'll be in the middle of a roast and my pilot light just goes right out. there's no telling when, and it can happen with any style roast. i notice that this problem is more prevalent in the winter months (i.e now), then the summer. but that's about all i can pin down on the variable front. i'm roasting on a beautiful probat ug-22 who almost never gives me any other problems.
side note, sometimes my pilot fails to catch when i first turn on the gas at the beginning of a roast. is this connected?
the general consensus at my roasting shop was to try some compressed air and to clean off the burners below the drum. tired it out and there's really no change. its also pretty difficult to hit each and every burner with the air can.
soooo..... anyone else have this problem? any suggestions? its pretty easy to get the pilot to relight, but it can throw off my target times by a good ten to thirty seconds if its being particularly finicky.

Compressed air on your burners will not fix the issue. I roast on a Diedrich myself, but I assume some of the solutions must carry over to Probat. Here are the normal culprits:
1.Bad air flow- How well do you clean the machine? If your system is sensing limited airflow, it can shut you down. But since the pilot re-lights and stays lit, this is probably not it.
2.Fan? Do you have an external fan or anything else that could possibly be blowing air onto the pilot light?
3.-and the most likely- You have a electric ignition that could possibly be getting ready to fail, OR you have a short somewhere within the machine controlling your volt supply to the electric ignition. Check ALL your wires and hotspots (with machine unplugged!), and make sure nothing is loose. Even a wire that looks screwed down, can possibly not be transferring proper voltage if the screw is slightly loose. That to me seems like the place to start. Sounds like something in your electrical is sometimes giving enough juice and sometimes not. All those small vibrations within the roaster can add up over time.
4. Also check your pilot wire from ignition box to pilot.
5. Call probat customer service. Again, Im no Probat pro, but it does sound electrical.

for the record, it turns out it was not an electrical problem, but actually an issue with our gas line. all's well now. but your suggestions lead us down the path to discover this - so thanks again!
