i love the australian greg pullman barista tamper one of the most comfortable tamps to use everyday

As amazing as that Wu-tang tamper is (and how much I want it now that I know it exists) I just recently bought myself a Reg (wood). I flirted with the idea of sticking with convex (we have an espressoparts tamper at the shop that I had been previously using), but decided to go flat. However, my friend Colin (Alterra) has been using the C-flat base on his reg and says nothing but good things about it. Anyone try the ripple yet and if so, tell us how it pulled.

Hey Dave...the ones you have seen around this area are made by a local guy Curt. He has made a few vesions of the Tamp. The one that Ben has at Octane is my personal fav! Give Ben a shout and I am sure he can give you more info. Curt is a great guy and is always tweaking the designs.

i love the ripples. i use them whenever i train. the idea behind them, from what i have been told, it that it creates more surface area on top of the puck and since the ripples have an even distance from each other the puck will expand on to the machine head more evenly. i have to admit that it pulls almost identically to a flat tamp but it looks way cooler haha.
there are a few that i have used that have less ripples that are fatter and i think i like it better.

Rob, are you talking about the one Ben has that has like a funky wood block pattern on the handle? If so, that is my absolute fav as well.

I was talking with Curt last weekend at Octane, his version of the ripple has concentric circles that are a little further spaced apart and a bit more extruded. His website is: http://www.newtamper.com He is hoping to flesh the website out a bit more with contact info soon, and should be around during conference. Cool stuff.

The theory, as I understand it, is controlling your water flow by giving it very specific paths to take. This would give you a more even soaking of the bed of coffee. Folks to a similar thing on a larger scale with soil.

For some reason the editing on this isn't working to well. I wanted to say a little more about my Xpressivo. The reason i prefer this tamper is for a number of reasons. First, it is sleek and sexy as hell. It has a very light weight which gives you an awesome feel between you and the espresso itself. The convex on this is very slight, which i love, and it has a line that goes around the base of the tamper. This allows you to be a bit more precise as to how much your dosing and so your able to eyeball how far the tamper will go in to accordingly to every dose. This line also help for you to see how even your tamp really is.

If you have never had the chance to play with one of these i encourage you to. It just might steal you heart.

The bumper tamps are pretty cool, but you'd have to pry my Reg C-Flat from my cold, dead hands.

yes! the wider one is the one i love at octane. they feel great.
a few people say they like lighter tamps....I have to say the heavier the better for me. If there was a lead tamp I would probably buy it. But just my opinion.

Yeah, Reg Barber, for real, they have a ton of options with it. Different metals, sizes, C-ripple flat, c-ripple Ame. Convex, c-ripple euro. convex. Just check out their website and the have all the info you need including ordering information.
