I have a small bakery and have been doing some of the bookkeeping with the assistance of a bookkeeper, but with the back and forth and me not being a total expert in quickbooks, I still feel I don't have a complete financial handle on how the cash is being earned and spent. So she proposed a flat fee where she would handle all data entry and such, and be able to communicate the financials to me through reports. On the one hand it's a bigger chunk of change, but it's actually not much more than the average I've been paying her hourly with little questions and projects here and there. And honestly I feel like I still don't know if I can take a bigger paycheck.

I guess the philosophical question is would paying an expert to handle gathering the info enable me to make better top level decisions? Perhaps even focus more energy on marketing?

I mean I can't do it all, the question is, can I pay for it?

Hi Stephanie,

Not to be too philosophical, but I think your question holds your answer. If you don't have a clear picture of your current financials, you have a real problem.

I'll bet she can help you identify some areas where spending is too high and pay for herself in the process. Even if she doesn't you could look at it as training... pay her for a few months and see how she approaches things. Maybe you'll pick up some things.

Don't get me wrong... I'm big into doing stuff yourself, but only to the extent that you can do a good job.

Good luck!
