There are 3 people who have to agree with the name of the coffee buisness and all 3 personalities differ drastically. We have the free spirited hippie (thats me) my husband who is OCD about everything and a computer nerd, then there is the doctor's wife, very prim and proper and elequent. She liked "Cool Beans", That name was over used. Gary likes Big Shots, but that is used, then I liked the Blue Rabbit because of the blue ridge mountains in which the shop resides, Gary liked it but obviously the Dr. wife hated it. I truly want something soulful. We will be serving lettuce wraps and torta wraps with soups and such. The vibe of the shope will be on the ting of blues and jazz. We will be roasting our own beans eventually. We will be big in to community and art and healthy living. We are located in Christiansburg, VA on Roanoke road. We are between Radford college and Virginia Tech. Please give suggestions if you like...I know this is probably not the right venue to be asking this questions, but you guys know coffee and you know coffee house names and we really need to settle this issue so we can start on signage and such. If you just happen to have a name settling in the back of your mind unused...

Your big concern is definitely managing the decision between the three partners. Though a consensus would be best, that seems unlikely. Maybe your best approach would be to set a deadline to have the decision made by, agree on a set of ground rules (several good suggestions here for them, unique and easily understood at least), and work up your list of names until the deadline. If you agree on the criteria for elimination there will be fewer hard feelings when a name is dropped. This should create a "short list" for you to select from, give you some time to let the names grow on you, and hopefully makes the final decision easier.

Not sure how it works in VA, but here in NC there are several places you have to check to see if a name is in use: County register of deeds, Secretary of State's office (for LLC). Add that to the aforementioned US Patent and Trademark Office's database. Consider also available domain names, google search results, facebook pages, etc.

Good luck.

FWIW, I like "Blue Rabbit Coffee Company" or "Blue Rabbit Cafe".
Thank you on the vote for the Blue Rabbit...I just again wish we could all agree. There seems to be an agreement on Black Water coffee Company (good Doobies Brother's song) The previous Black Water coffee company went out of buisness in Nov.2008...I could live with Black Waters Thank you again for your input, it was great to get some responses in my time of crisis. I will let you know the final decision.

Hi dd,
Blue Rabbit is just perfect (and you and Gary are two against one;-).
At the end of the day the name is not really that important for the success of the business. What does starbucks have to do with coffee? What about Gloria Jeans? Illy?

D&D? Los Tres amigos? The Three Little Indians? Sargent Bean? Torta Café? The Doctor's Wife coffee shop? Prim Bean? Alface Café? (alface=lettuce in portuguese)
I figured as such that the name would be in use. Really, I am beginning to think using the Blue in the name might be over kill in the area. Thanks for the response. We all seem to like Black Waters Coffee Company, the name is dead at the moment.

Thanks Andrew, I came across that sight a couple months ago and I put some suggestions to use from the sight and they all went sour believe it or not with the group. That is why I could just scream...Black Water Coffee Company seems to be a favorite among all three personality types...(good song as well) I will keep you posted...Again, it is so awesome to have coffee people respond and lend a hand. It goes to show we are all good people ready to help our brother and sister barista in need!

Actually, this sort of discussion has been the single hottest topic on my blog since I wrote an article about it in 2005. There are 340 comments (at the time of writing) that may be helpful and users read the posts to make new suggestions almost daily: http://www.coffeestrategies.com/2005/06/02/coffee-shop-names

Maybe something there that can help.
The barista brothers and sisters are awesome! Thank you all for lending a helping hand and responding so quickly. It definitely made me smile to hear all the great comments and slams...haha

Having all of your input really let me know that I am in good company and can call on my fellow barista's when in crisis. Right now and this to could pass, because something always seems to bust the bubble, but Black Waters Coffee Company seems to be a go with all three personality types...WOW!~ So, I will keep you all posted, and still if any great name comes to mind...Please send them my way, because like I said "things tend to go south" around here, no pun intended.
I personally have never been a fan of cheesy puns. That being said, you should probably call it "Tamp-Tamp Revolution."
OK well now that you have landed on a name you like. I think you are looking at Black Water Coffee Company right? Try using google to look up the name because that is what people driving by will think of first.

Black Water is what the sewer water is called in an RV. The other negative thing is that Blackwater is the contract para-military group that is hired out by the government in the middle east. They have some not so great things associated with them.

However when I think of Black Water I will always think of you 3 :)

Good catch. The Blackwater name is so tainted, the company has changed it to "Xe," pronounced "zee."

Whatever name is chosen, be sure to do a proper multi-state and federal trademark search, so you don't get one of those ugly "lawyer's letters." Searching your own state is not enough, if someone has a federally registered trademark.
We had a band called the bobby flay experience for a while. And I always thought that it would be great to pay homage to him even further by naming a cafe after him... And he might give you some money... so how about "The Flay Cafe"
Thanks for the Flay idea. I thought we were going with Blackwater, now the negative has become an issue and there is a blackwater in floyd VA. So, back to the drawing board.

Who needs Bobby Flay when you could have Paula Deen?

wait, wait.. Paula Bean.

That's the sound of striking gold right there.
