ROI vs Return on Relationships: Estimating Value of Social Media

As a coffee industry operator, how are you embracing (or not) the opportunities and challenges that the social web, social media and social networking present?

I spoke at Coffee Fest Seattle recently on social media. In a survey of the forty persons in the seminar, 1 used Twitter and 28 used Facebook. Only a few were exploring the use of social networking to drive sales in their shops.

1) Are you using social media?
2) How did you quantify the ROI or Return on Relationships prior to and during your strategy?
3) Did you launch with a strategy or just jump in?
4) What can you do more effectively?
5) Are you just not interested in using social media in your business?

Chalkboarder.com provides social media strategies and execution for clients ranging from Mom'n'Pops to International Corporations. 1) Are you using social media? Yes- twitter mainly, not yet using FB as I get frustrated with all the junk requests that come through. Twitter seems to me to be more easily adaptable for business purposes only

2) How did you quantify the ROI or Return on Relationships prior to and during your strategy? I would say ROTI (a return on time invested). Twitter is just a normal part of my daily schedule. When I am online I just fill in whats going on. I know there are at least 2 dozen BX'ers using Twitter.

3) Did you launch with a strategy or just jump in? Jumped in

4) What can you do more effectively? Use links from Tweets to relavant off Twitter locations to promote actual instore activites etc.

5) Are you just not interested in using social media in your business?
Just Not Facebook unless they get rid of the silly parts!
