Does heat source matter? Flame on drum?

Are there any particular features that are a necessity?

What mistakes to avoid? brands to avoid?

I live on the US/Canadian border so I can purchase from either country.

Thank you again for all of the guidance. I'd love to learn from others' mistakes as much as possible before making my own!

Hey Nate, I personally have not used or purchased this roaster, but I have heard good things about them and the owner is a really cool and caring, hands-on guy. He's on Twitter as http://twitter.com/sanfranroaster and his website is: http://www.coffeeper.com/

He has either 2 or 3 brothers (3 I think) that all own and use his roasters as well in their coffee businesses.

I have heard some good things about the San Franciscan. What makes it a good choice? I know someone with an older Toper for sale. Any thoughts on Toper? or my other questions. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated...thank you!

Thanks for the input Derryl. The $10K is what I currently have, not the only funds. In any case, $5K seems like a hefty investment in just the chimney.

I just mention it cause the manufacturer of the roaster never did give me a good idea of the cost & it came at a bit of a surprise.

I roast on a San Fran 6lb and love it, and they are working on a model that is more along your lines as I type this. Talk to Bill Kennedy, 1 775 996 2280. Tell him Luke Hudek said to ask about the 10lber he is working on. It's made out of a mild steel, so no hot spots!

Exhausting ours was dirt cheap as we did it ourselves and had planned it in advance, YRMV.

Thank you Luke! It appears that there are happy San Franciscan owners. What are the drawbacks of this brand? Why do you like it?

The biggest reasons I like the brand are because:

Its hand made in America
The metal it uses doe not have hot spots in the drum
It has easy maintenance.
The smoke was easy to vent

I suppose the biggest drawback was waiting for the roaster, the lead time on it was just over a month from when we ordered it since it was made for us.
