Here at Caffe Mela all the baristas are going to get their very own custom tamper. I've been looking all over online for some really sweet creative tampers but I just can't find anything much cooler than colored tamps. Please help me and my fellow baristas out!

Agreed! I think I creeped out even the EspressoParts guys/gals by standing at their table and tamping imaginary shots for about 45 minutes, trying different handle/base combos until I was happy. Thousands of shots later, I am really glad I took the time to find the tamp that fits my stance.

Just a note, I would suggest taking the baristas to Coffee Fest or somewhere where they can get their hands on a bunch of tampers that feel great to them. There is little worse than having to endure an 8 hour shift on bar with a tamper that doesn't fit your hand properly.
To be honest I would love to do something like that. How much more custom can you get you know? But unfortunately our owner doesn't really pay enough attention to the shop to organize anything like that. And no one will let me. So basically its just a matter of what I can suggest to the other baristas to help.
uuuggghhhhh its very disappointing. you know, being as passionate about espresso as I am and not getting the same passion thrown back at me :( thats love tho right? :)
does anyone have specs on the extent of the convex bottom of the TORR Tampers or know if the edges of the flat base have a slight curve to them? hard to tell what's what from the pics.
I'm super diggin' the La Forza and Pullman tampers. I'm going to talk to a local metal fab shop about making one for me, but if that falls through I'm for sure hitting up one of these companies!!
I have always wanted someone to make me a 'pistol-grip' tamper. Keeps the arm straight and pointing down and would look cool in an apocalyptic kinda way!
Have a 'shot' from my pistol grip!
I'm thinking brass knuckles as a tamper. That would be pretty BA.
i actually saw one!! i'm not sure if it was functional but it was fun to look at!

Check out my Buffalo Tamp. I make them here in Santa Cruz using only the highest quality materials with choice of domestic sustainable madrone wood handle, solid stainless handle and flash brass handle. Our base is solid stainless. The tamp has a genuine 1936 buffalo nickel planted in the palm of the handle and can be 'flipped' for the indian head. I can engrave your barista's names in the base for a nominal fee. Very slight 1mm convex base is standard. Any width is available by special order. Apart from not being boring - at all - these are hand crafted with serious attention to detail. The short is a great fit for most people. The tall is for people with large hands.

Well, we caved and bought a Reg Barber a couple minutes ago. Should see this bad boy in a few weeks!! This thing is frickin legit! You can order the base down to the tenth of a millimeter! That's awesome! Getting our cafe's logo engraved on it. Set us back a cool penny though, but it's going to be well worth it.
I recommend Espressoparts.com. Those guys make custom tamps all the time, and made the Limited Edition Barista Guild tampers this past year. They do a great job, and the tampers are sweet.
Brandi,

Rad tampers are just a click away @ Espressoparts.com. Dave W who does allot of the custom tamper work has ties to Wenatchee as well, so it's a natural! If you don't see what your looking for ask Dave for some images of other work we have done. We just finished a tamp that has a bronze medallion in the top of and a sterling silver bezel with a 1/2 carat diamond and a laser engraved base.... I would say Rad.

...will be a great start (although, just a touch dated) about a whole slew of tamps and which do what really well, and which are difficult how.
These are experienced barista getting their hands on a dozen or more different tamps and comparing them against one another, and using their particular likes and dislikes as scale.
Find a barista that is physically and philosophically like you, and see what they like...
