About Me:
I live in Portland Oregon where I am the director of training at the American Barista & Coffee School and Bellissimo Coffee Advisors. I am also a partner at Water Avenue Coffee. I spend most of my time training new and existing business owners how to open and operate successful retail coffee businesses. In my spare time you might find me having coffee or sipping a pint at one of Portlands great coffee shops or brew pubs. I spend lots of time also with my beautiful wife and little wiener dog.
Professionally I have been in this industry for almost 15 years and have worked as a barista, manager, trainer and consultant. I speak at Coffee Fest and SCAA Tradeshows and sit on the SCAA Training Committee as a lead espresso trainer and was on the USBC Committee 2007/08. I have been certified as a judge for the NWRBC/USBC and have placed 3rd in the MillRock Latte Art Competition. I have written articles for Barista Magazine, Fresh Cup Magazine, Specialty Coffee Retailer and the SCAA Chronicle and have been quoted in many magazines and newspapers in regards to specialty coffee and retail coffee business.
About My Company:
The American Barista & Coffee School [ABC's] is the first and only professional school in the U.S. devoted to domestic and international specialty coffee business education and hands-on barista training. No other coffee school can match the scope of ABC's educational and retail success-building curriculum.
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
teaching people about how amazing coffee is, and seeing them fall in love.
Hello Matt, this is probably the coolest thing to happen to the barista community! Thank you. I have hosted a few small barista jams in Orange County, Ca. They are never very big, but I am hoping with the next one I will be able to inform everyone about this site. I think this site will really add to the growth of the coffee community in our county. Thank again, hope to meet you in DC.
Thanks for flogging - er - blogging the tour guide thing - lots of people are starting to use it. Next time you go somewhere see if there's a cool guide on Viamigo.
After one month of roaming in your barista exchange creation, I can give you congratulations for your effort that I believe that substantially it will promote the good coffee and the profession of barista internationally.
Thank you for given us the connection between all of us.
Matt, we had a great time with you last week, too, but man, it's great to be home. 9 degrees this morining, though; tough to get out of bed. Now we're busy at it, and spending the day budgeting. I'm calling Ed to discuss plans this afternoon, and drinking some fresh brewed coffee, compliments of your stash, so thanks again for everything.
Hey Matt ! This site is really cool ! Im gonna be on here EVERYDAY ! lol You're playin' my fave Zero 7 song! Wait no Im lyin' I like "Likufanele" on that album too Shop's slow coming Atlanta's still trying to feel us out but the people who have visited LOVE us so that's a great start ! Good to hear from ya !
Matt- I'm working on a business strategy report to complete my degree. I chose to focus on the need for properly trained employees in the independently owned coffee industry. Can you give me any tips as to the best way to incorporate a training program?
Matt,
I had received some requests for friends, but cannot find "qccept" or similar button for it. What should I do with it? Need your help. I cannot either send you a message.

When I manage with this website, I have always some problem. Does it mean I have to change some of the settings of my IE?
I've been a busy bee, lately. I'm wrapping up the dissertation, starting a project that attempts to determine a coffee's origin and just finished writing a book about coffee.
How's married life (or has that not happened, yet?). I reckon I'll be seeing you in Minneapolis?
Hey Matt, it was great having you, Jared, and Ed as instructors. You guys really know how to break it down and make the process of operating a shop less intimidating! Thanks for everything!
Hi Matt I sent a big reply to your comment below but I think I must have sent it off to the cyberspace-cloud. It was good to see you and I'm sorry we didn't get more time together. I enjoyed spending time with your dad. We've seen each other from a distance many times at conferences over the years but it was nice to get to know him a bit better. I enjoy his artistic side and in fact that is why I chose the photographer I used for the book because he had such an original creative approach. In fact my mum (age 87) is an artist and from before I can remember I have been surrounded with oil paints, easils, paintings and subjects. Thanks for your good wishes for the book. It is currently with the printers in Hong Kong and is on track. I am thinking of doing an e-version which I could have ready in a couple of weeks. I'd be really interested on your thoughts on that.
Hey there buddy ... Everything is going really well since the class is over ... Ryan and I are still looking for a "perfect" location... Nothing has really popped out to us ... we have been making friends with local coffeehouse owners.. and they are being very helpful with certain ideas and location wise ... We know our future coffeehouse location is out there ... and we won't stop until we find it =)
hey Matt. things are ok. just trying to kick this cafe into high gear. learned a lot from you guys and trying to add my flare to it and make it successful. you?
Ya - count me in on any Victoria B.C. visits (I will be your tour guide... at least some of the time...) We are seriously overdue for a Portland visit - maybe you can send me a "must-visit" list for people coming into Portland for a 3-day weekend.

Congratulations on the popularity of this madness!
I hope life is good for you. I'll be in touch with you soon as we get closer to opening our café down here. We'll be having a little opening party which should be fun if you can make it - May or so...
Anyhow, be well!

I've not yet decided who/what I'll be volunteering for. However, should I decide to pull shots, I'll consider you first.
See you in a few months,
