About Me:
I live in Portland Oregon where I am the director of training at the American Barista & Coffee School and Bellissimo Coffee Advisors. I am also a partner at Water Avenue Coffee. I spend most of my time training new and existing business owners how to open and operate successful retail coffee businesses. In my spare time you might find me having coffee or sipping a pint at one of Portlands great coffee shops or brew pubs. I spend lots of time also with my beautiful wife and little wiener dog.
Professionally I have been in this industry for almost 15 years and have worked as a barista, manager, trainer and consultant. I speak at Coffee Fest and SCAA Tradeshows and sit on the SCAA Training Committee as a lead espresso trainer and was on the USBC Committee 2007/08. I have been certified as a judge for the NWRBC/USBC and have placed 3rd in the MillRock Latte Art Competition. I have written articles for Barista Magazine, Fresh Cup Magazine, Specialty Coffee Retailer and the SCAA Chronicle and have been quoted in many magazines and newspapers in regards to specialty coffee and retail coffee business.
About My Company:
The American Barista & Coffee School [ABC's] is the first and only professional school in the U.S. devoted to domestic and international specialty coffee business education and hands-on barista training. No other coffee school can match the scope of ABC's educational and retail success-building curriculum.
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
teaching people about how amazing coffee is, and seeing them fall in love.
Likewise! I'm just wasting time in some random coffeehouse in Hilsboro. Going to check out more of Portland and some other coffee places before heading north tomorrow. See you there.
hey matt, love the site but could we get a little stronger moderation on where topics are supposed to be posted? i get so aggravated at having to comb through the detritus on the "barista exchanges and travel" forum to find anything relevant to actually exchanging baristi. i think lazy people just post there cause it's the first forum. thanks bro
Hi Matt! Thanks so much for inviting me to join the bX Member Supporters' Group! I don't know how I survived before bX! It's a sparkling fountain of great ideas, humor, and support from my favorite community of people, and it has become completely indispensable to me! I wish you the best in everything you do! Peace.
Hey Matt-
Nice job on the exchange, quite an impressive following already. Stoked to be able to network with the coffee world!
If your ever in B.C....stop on by.
matt, what's going on? going to be moving from daytona hopefully soon. apparently it's not the hip place it used to be back in the day. daytona is kind of a run down area now. looking at places port orange, its' nice and income levels, etc are better. just curious about what other coffee shops are getting these days in terms of rent deals. also what should an average coffee shop get in sales per day. any suggestions? thanks for the help, ciao
Hey Matt, got my BX T-shirt just in time to wear while in Papua...goal is try to get it to each of our Indo origins over next 6 months. Did you make the Barista Champs in the Pacific?
Matt. Where can I find your report on your Vanuatu adventure? Vanuatu is close to Mackay, Queensland, [well only a couple of thousand klicks] and we have connections there. Thanks.
the building is pretty close to complete. we have to paint the walls and seal the counter tops but we are roasting already. we plan on having a soft opening so as to get John and Heather acquainted with the linea and customer service. I'll shoot you an e mail and post an announcement on BX.
Matt, any idea where I might be able to get some roaster chimney pipe FAST? My engineer screwed up and he tells me the pipe will be another 10 weeks (he didn't order the right stuff months ago). I'm looking for double walled stainless steel pressure vented pipe - about 12 feet of it plus an 8"T connection to match.
Let meknow if you know of anyone who might be able to help...
Thanks,
David (Stick in the Mud)
This is Yang from Venice Grind,CA. Great to meet you in NYC coffee fest. And so
good to know that you open your school in Beijing last summer, can't wait to go
back and check it out.
Per our conversation, i have some question that how to looking for a good Barista, because we are pouring stumptown in LA area. We are serious about what we are doing, however, we need more and more professional barista and people join our crew.
Hope you have some good connection and please let me know if you ever visit LA.
Enjoyed your Vanuatu story. Thanks. It's a long way to go, I hope you got as much from the trip as the locals did. There are many family contacts from the 'labour trade' days in the 1860's to 1905 between queensland and there, including my family. We all appreciate assistance in helping.
Hello! Thanks again for welcoming me into your space. We are getting close to open, late June, and it's finally all coming together. I am excited to come check out WAC.
Matt, I am really digging this coffee you sent us. I have been meaning to leave you a comment. I throughly enjoyed the Honduras, I liked the Toro espresso alot as well.(always a fan of Sumatra as well) I didn't seem to get the crema I expected any tips? Anyways Water Avenue rocks and I hope we start order some coffee from you soon!
Jared Hamilton, GPF
Hey Matt, Hope all is well. Just wondering if there is anything planned outside of the October 1st roasting class that you and I talked about a couple of weeks ago?
Let me know. Thanks

Hey Matt! I stopped by Water Avenue Coffee last week and had a great experience! Very comfortable environment, friendly and welcoming baristas, and the ethiopian SOE as a macchiato was fabulous! Will definitely be stopping through again soon.

Hi Matt! I have a suggestion for the website. Is a special section in which Professional in Marketing gave us sugestions to promote our business. You can invite professional from different kind of market, because your page has member from around the world and every market is different. But you can post this section like marketing by/in your area. I know that you have discussions and comments about marketing in your website, but they are informal. I think that this is a very important subject and should be started by Professional in the coffee business, and them we can comment and add our suggestions. What do you think? Thanks again
Hi Matt, I like the new format for the BX site- nice, simple and clean. Always enjoy the time I spend on BX- been so busy with openings in Australia and Malaysia that time has been really tight...hope to have a bit more over next few months. Cheers
