Phil. I'm sure that the CoEq people are great people, as are the majority of the folks in this industry, but damn, there is no other way to say the truth- they sold out to the corporate 800 lb. gorilla for a fast buck. Would I do it? Maybe, but I wouldn't expect the rest of the community to turn the other cheek.
They sold machines to quality obsessed shops who had to stretch to afford the Clover, and then as soon as the machine has the bugs worked out, they make a deal with a company that is a corporate fast food chain. SBUX isn't and hasn't been 'great coffee' in a decade or more. They are what they are for their real estate acumen and their commitment to the economies of scale and the bottom line.
And now, nobody will have a Clover except for the people who really don't need it. But, I guess they already own the company that makes their logo-ed to-go cups. That's what they're really interested in selling- the *$ image. The purchase of CoEq is just furthering that end, and please, you bloated watery tart, prove me wrong!

NO. i dont work days anymore, phil.
  • Tim Noble

    True enough, Phil.
I am the first to admit that my reaction to all of this is colored by the fact that I was weeks from ordering an "automated brewer" to use Caragay's phrase, and this potentially throws a wrench into my business plan. I'm still pissed that the machine is being removed from the market- and I don't know that for a fact, but I suspect it is true based on SBUX's history and the opinions that have been offered by people (possibly) smarter than me.
I hope you have a nice weekend- I'm enjoying the Kinunu right now, and loving it! I brought it up to the farm in New York for the family to (not) appreciate.
    Regards, Dude.

Met you in DC at CounterCulture ate lunch with you and Katie. Was looking around the net for some cool coffee ink and found your post on Troy's page. Come across anything else cool? I'm wanting to get inked real soon but haven't found anything expressive enough to live with forever. Hope you are well.

  • Mike

With the advent of trying different temps for coffee on the clover. Adjustablity is also a hope of mine for espresso.
  • Nuova Simonelli

Any time. I was not aware that you were with Counter Culture. Toscano is one of the most amazing espressos I have ever tasted.
  • Sarah Aileen

I heard! That's so exciting! My schedule's a bit crazy but I'll try to swing by Monday, I should be out of work by 4 or so if you'll still be around. I'm off Tuesday too, if that'd be better. I'm super excited for them, they're the sweetest people!!

Hey man, no one ever tells me when you come to State College. I've been busy with school. Let me know next time you're in town and I'll make a point to come in and pull some shots. I just got a 2GR Brasilia Portofino today. For personal use. hoping to tear the sucker down and rebuild it even though it functions properly. Any thing new and exciting? Hope to see you soon.
  • lindsaytron

Haha! The Internet is awesome. Looking forward to meeting you in the real world at the jam!
  • emily jackson

i've saved the date for the jam in easton, however getting the time off from the shop is always a headache so we'll see if it's possible as it gets closer to jam time. yeah, let me know when you're in the 'burgh. we've got a couple of c.o.e coffees right now ( panama and brazil) right now and some rocking s.o. espresso that'll knock you're socks off.
  • JIm Saborio

love to talk pour-over with you. You're welcome anytime... just bring coffee! I miss Durham's finest from my days at Zola.
  • Bryan Duggan

Thanks Phil! I'm thrilled to be a part of CCC and yes, I still rock the green shoes. I hope all is well in Philly. Now, if I can only figure out barista exchange!
  • Lucy R. Valena

Unfortunately, I can't go to the jam in Easton. Life is just a little too crazy. Hope you're well and have a wonderful time!
  • Gwen

Yeah the machine is so lovely. We're thinking of having a competition in the company to see which store gets it. I started on a Simonelli at lee road before we made a company-wide switch to La San Marco. As the brew guru for the Jam I was wondering if you had any tips on using a neapolitan (topsy-turvy) pot. I feel like mine is still coming out a bit strong and I'm not sure if it's my grind or dose. The poorly translated Italian instructions said "fine" but books I've read have been all over the place. Any suggestions?
  • Ant Walach

Hey Phil, thanks for the link to your Flickr. Those photos came out great! Devorah and I are in the process of doing a blog write up of the Jam for Gimme!. Would you mind if we used some of your shots in it? (photo credit given to you of course)
  • Ant Walach

Thanks! I'll send the link to you when it's posted.
