I have been in the Point of Sale industry for 14 Years. The past 6 years I have focused primarily on providing Point of Sale Systems for Coffee Shops.
If you are a barista or shop, are you interested in a barista exchange with another coffee shop/barista?
no
About Me:
I have been with SelbySoft for 14 years. I started in the Shipping Department, moved to the Customer Service Department shortly thereafter and currently, I am the Vice President and working in the Sales Department. Changing positions over the years within SelbySoft has given me a great understanding of how not only the Point of Sale industry functions, but also how the Coffee Industry functions. I take great pride in working for SelbySoft and the outstanding Point of Sale system we provide.
About My Company:
SelbySoft is a leading Point of Sale provider to the Coffee Industry. With 22 years of POS experience, SelbySoft can handle any type of Coffee Shop, Cafe or Drive Thru. SP-1 for Coffee is our premier product with features like gift and loyalty, inventory, time keeping, theft control and reporting.
What is your favorite thing about the coffee industry?
The people and their dedication to the industry. And, of course, the COFFEE!
Mike, it will be my first coffee fest. Any suggestions on workshops or general info. I plan to attend all three days and make the most of it. As far as the free passes, that would be terrific. Thanks, Kip
Hi Mike, thanks for the offer, but I already have a pass. Maybe I'll see you there. This is my first Coffee Fest and first time in Seattle so really looking forward to it.
Thank you, Mike. Um, I haven't started at Gimme! just yet. They had a store close so they had to get those people some shifts. But they are opening another one in Ithaca here soon. Only a matter of time. For now, I'm at a place called "the Shop." It's a small tattoo parlor, espresso bar, and venue. It's great. And Ithaca is awesome. Thanks for keeping me in on things. And tell Steve that it's about time you guys got into Barista Magazine!
Thanks Mike! I'm trying to get my staff in order so I thought I'd try finding some people on this site! I found a few earlier today through the University of Toronto, but I'd love to find some people that are really into coffee! Cross your fingers for me!
Hi Mike,
isn't that funny, first contact in barista x is somebody, how knows Nuremberg with the Bratwuerstchen, I couldn't belief. Thanks for your welcome. If you ever visit Nuremberg again let me know, it would be a pleasure to invite you for a good espresso. Joerg
hey mike it says you are online. i keep calling your office but no answer. i am locked out of my system. I spoke with one of your reps a couple of weeks ago asking why every 6 months i have to get an access codes. this makes life very very difficult. Now, i cannot ring customers! I had to turn a couple of people away because they did not have cash. Mike please call me back! this is very hard for a small coffee shop like myself not able to use the system?
Thanks for the welcome Mike. Just getting my feet wet I guess. Rather than jumping right in I've found that it's best get familiar with the site, read the posts, and find some friends...LOL. I'm a mod at another site and have pretty much seen it all, so I don't wanna make the mistakes some newbies do. :-) Rich
Mike, do you have an agent for Southeast Asia? If so could you please give me a buzz/drop me a line. We have 4 stores now, looking at adding 2 more in calendar year 2010. We are using a local system which works, but not what i am after...
Hey Mike, this is pretty out of nowhere, but do you guys still happen to have/have permission to give out free Coffee Fest passes? I kind of fell asleep on this one and have some baristas that would like to be first time attendees.
Mike, also very nice to meet and talk with you on the future of your service and my business relationship with your services. At some point I will probably consider your company over CSM which we no longer have any support for. I think I found a solution for a system to call up a customer without their interaction. QR codes printed on shirts/cups/ any promotional item that they bring back in like our cups we are having designed. Are you aware of the R&D with QR codes? Here is one of the most progressive examples. With this IPhone app. you can read the id cards we had hanging from our necks at the Coffee fest. http://news.cnet.com/qr-code-readers-for-iphone
Very interesting. I do not know the practical operational side of scanning technology, in other words I'm learning from you how the card swipe reads data. I think the bar code scanner reads or looks for a typical bar code so I'm not sure how a QR code is read or what it sees. I have a QR code generator that I can input any kind of data in the form of text or URL's etc. I guess I was assuming that with the right interface or scanner I could just use the customers last name and get the POS software to pull up the account.
Never as simple as it looks to the lay person. I like the cup RFID scan concept. What kind of reader would you guys or I need to read it? My bar code reader?
I sure missed making the complete booth rounds on Sunday. Maybe I can make the Houston Event next year.
Cheers to you Mike Keep up the great work.
Joseph
Mike,
Your not off base at all. We, you and I, just never got a chance to talk in depth on what I am doing currently with CSM. I have been using the loyility card package/system that came with CSM for the two years we have been open. Works ok. Few customers ever carry there card in and hand it to me on a regular basis. So to solve this I learn their last name. I don't want to have to ask them or trouble them to pull out their card and hand it to me or one of my baristas. So that is why I have been in conversation with you on how to step up to the next level with technology. This again is what I was thinking when I said if my customers came in with a QR code on a Sasquatch Coffee Roasters tee shirt or cup my scanner could snag their last name / call up their record/ deduct the cost of the drink they usually get, all with only a key or two stroke by the checker / barista. Hand them their drink and shorten there time staring at the checker. I think we are on the same page with this discussion. I'm just not sure if CSM or SelbySoft has a scanner that can do this. I hope you come up with it because I want to eventually move away from CSM because of their high annual maintenance fee.
Thanks again for the RFID cup source. I'll check it out.
Sincerely,
Joseph

Hey Mike. Thanks for your message. Like I said before, I've noticed that most people have had a great experience with Selbysoft. I'm not in a position to give out the shop name but I will relay your message to the ownership :-) thanks for being so involved here on Barista Exchange!
Thanks for the response. We have a major requirement for invertory of apparel and gifts. If your system will allow us to maintain our inventory and report on hand quantities at any time. I left you a voice mail.
