We are excited to announce the second annual benefit drawing for Coffee Kids with three great prizes from Coffee Kids supporters. The drawing will be held on Sunday, April 18 at 1 pm at the Coffee Kids' booth (#2157) at the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) Expo in Anaheim, CA.

Tickets for the drawing are available for a suggested donation of $25 (five entries for a donation of $100) and participants need not be present to win. Please visit Coffee Kids Donate page and enter SCAA in the 'memorial/gift' field. You can also donate over the phone by calling 505-820-1443.

The prizes include:

1st prize – A Mypressi Handheld Espresso Machine and free coffee donated by Vision Espresso Services of Seattle, WA; and a Behmor 1600 1lb Coffee Roaster donated by Behmor, Inc., of Incline Village, NV;
2nd prize – A Behmor 1600 1lb Coffee Roaster donated by Behmor, Inc., of Incline Village, NV;
3rd prize – A fully-packed coffee gift basket with fresh roasted fair trade organic coffees, whole leaf teas and other items from The Little Bean of Huntington Beach, CA.

All proceeds from the drawing will benefit Coffee Kids' efforts to help coffee-farming families improve their quality of life.

Staff at Coffee Kids are busy prepping for the upcoming Specialty Coffee Association of America’s (SCAA) Expo in Anaheim, CA, April 15-18. If you’re planning to attend, visit us at booth #2157 in the expo hall. We’ll have our new t-shirts on display ready to take orders.

We’ll also be selling tickets for the Coffee Kids Benefit drawing. There are three great prizes, including Behmor Roasters, a Mypressi Handheld Espresso Machine from Visions Espresso, and a Tea and Coffee Gift Basket from the Little Bean Coffee Company. Tickets are a suggested donation of $25, or 5 for $100.

If you can’t attend the show, purchase tickets through our website by making a donation here (be sure to enter SCAA in the ‘memorial/gift’ field). You can also donate over the phone by calling 505-820-1443.

On Friday night from 5-7pm in Ballroom A of the Anaheim Convention Center, stop by the Coffee Kids Reception sponsored by InterAmerican Coffee. We will highlight the achievements of FHC of Costa Rica, a longtime Coffee Kids partner that has provided scholarship opportunities to thousands of students from coffee-farming communities. Light refreshments and cash bar will be available.

Coffee Kids staff will also be presenting on a couple panels at the expo. Executive Director Carolyn Fairman will present at, “Ask the Experts: What is the Ethical Coffee Debate,” in Room 207C on Saturday, April 17 from 9-10:15 a.m. International Program Director Jose Luis Zarate will be on the panel of “The Hidden Element in Sustainability,” in Room 207B on Saturday, April 17 from 10:30-11:45 a.m.

Coffee Kids Getting the SCAA Jitters

The Specialty Coffee Association of America’s (SCAA) Annual Expo is coming up next week, April 17-19, and we’re all busy prepping for the show. Coffee Kids will have a booth (#1334) in the exhibition hall and if you plan to attend, please stop by!

Our reception, sponsored by InterAmerican Coffee, will be Friday, April 17 from 5-7pm in Room 302A of the Georgia World Congress Center. Fatima Isabel Espinoza, general manager of Coffee Kids’ partner SOPPEXCCA in Nicaragua, will give a brief presentation on their organization’s efforts to promote leadership and cultural pride in schools where they work. And we’ll be holding a Coffee Kids Quiz for prizes.

We’ll also be selling tickets for our drawing to win a Sonofresco Roaster donated by Elan Organic Coffee. Tickets for the drawing are available for a suggested donation of $25 (five entries for a donation of $100) and participants need not be present to win. Stop by our booth or our reception to sign up. The winner’s name will be drawn on Sunday, April 19 at 1 pm at the Coffee Kids booth (#1334).See you there!

SCAA Announces 2009 Nominees for Board of Directors

January 27, 2009The SCAA Board of Directors has approved the following slate of nominees, selected by the nominating committee, for election to the board of directors. The election will be conducted March 2 – March 31, 2009.OFFICERSTim O'Connor for Second Vice President - Allied Member (Pacific Espresso)Shawn Hamilton for Secretary/Treasurer – Roaster Member (Java City)NOTE: The Second Vice President will Become Vice President on May 1, 2010, and president of the board on May 1, 2011.DIRECTORSEllie Matuszak for Director – Allied Member (Coffee Solutions)Ellen Rogers for Director – Coffee Retailer Member (Dunkin’ Donuts)Nathalie Gabbay for Director – Importer Member (RGC Coffee, Inc.)Price Peterson for Director – Producer Member (Hacienda Esmeralda/Panama)Max Quirin for Director – Producer Association Member (ANACAFE)25 Signatures Due on February 25, 2009, for Petition Candidates to be Placed on BallotIndividuals who wish to be considered by the membership for election to the board, but who were not selected through the nominating committee process, may submit a signature petition to be placed on the ballot. The SCAA Bylaws currently state:"Section 11: (d) Additional nominees may be proposed through a petition process. Should any member be proposed by petition, the petition must contain a minimum of twenty-five (25) signatures from eligible voting members. The petition shall be submitted at least thirty (30) days prior to the mailing of the ballots. All nominees qualified under the Bylaws and receiving the required number of signatures will be placed on the ballot. All candidates will be given equal access to promote their candidacy through membership mailings and by access to the membership lists."In this current election year, PETITIONS ARE DUE TO SCAA HEADQUARTERS ON FEBRUARY 25, 2009. Also due on February 25, 2009 are biographies/statements and photos from all nominees, whether selected through petition or by the nominating committee. Photographs and statements from the candidates are optional, but all nominees are encouraged to submit a 500 word biographical and vision statement. Photos and statements will be printed in an online ballot book for members to review before voting. Please note that all 25 signatures submitted by petition candidates must be from current SCAA members in voting categories and only one signature per member company is allowed. Associate and individual members of SCAA are not voting members. SCAA Names Emily Oak to World Barista Championship Board

(July 22 2008) —The Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) announces the appointment of Emily Oak as the newest member to represent the association's interest on the World Barista Championship (WBC) Board of Directors.Oak is Director of Training and Development for Australian Independent Roasters, an SCAA member and wholesale roaster located near Sydney, Australia. She is slated to serve a two-year term on the internationally-recognized barista competition's board.In addition to four representatives from the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE), with whom the SCAA jointly owns the WBC, Oak joins current SCAA representatives Cindy Chang, of Counter Culture Coffee, Nicholas Cho of murky coffee, and Andrew Hetzel of Cafemakers, LLC on the WBC Board of Directors, These volunteers are tasked with continuing the interest and growth of the WBC on a global scale while building a stronger educational and social platform for the worldwide barista community.Oak represented Australia as a competitor at the 2001 World Barista Championship in Miami. Since then she has served as a WBC judge, WBC regional coordinator for the Asia Pacific region, and chair of the WBC regional coordinator committee, in addition to other professional and volunteer accomplishments in the global specialty coffee industry."SCAA is pleased to select Emily to represent our association on the WBC Board of Directors," said SCAA Executive Director Ric Rhinehart. USBC Champion Kyle Glanville, Intelligentsia Coffee

Can't tell you how happy I am for Kyle Glanville, the new USBC Champion! Kyle is such a great representative and ambassador for the barista community and the US coffee industry. Big congrats to all six finalists, this comp must go down as the most competitive in US history. Here is the video from the live video blog coverage, thanks to the SCAA blog team!
